KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY – TRULY A STERLING EFFORT
To those in the know, the news that Andy Sterling’s famous Rover-powered DAX Rush has won another championship in the 750 Motor Club series may not be too surprising.
But this season was a whole new ballgame – it was actually Andy’s far less experienced brother Charles Sterling who was behind the steering wheel!!
It all started at the beginning of 2006 when Charles discovered that Andy was unable to commit to a full race season and promptly asked if he could drive the car instead. Charles’ aim was to have some fun behind the wheel and get some valuable race experience in the lofty heights of the Which Kit 750 Motor Club Kit Car championship (Class A).
In practice, it was extremely difficult for Andy to say no as it was Charles (through his company ‘Travelspot’) that had sponsored Andy to his remarkable overall championship win of 2005.
Despite having some previous motorsport experience, Charles hadn’t been on a race circuit for over 7 years and certainly didn’t expect to have any significant success in 2006 – let alone gain the Class A Which Kit 750 Motor Club Kit Car championship at his very first attempt!!
But in the event, he soon found that he was notching up a highly impressive list of achievements. Throughout the season, Charles secured no fewer than 5 outright race wins, 6 class wins, 4 fastest laps and, most pleasingly, set 2 new lap records. A level of success of which anybody would be proud – let alone one so new to the car and the Class-A championship!!
When asked how he felt about the championship, Charles replied, “It’s been a truly amazing experience. The DAX was a joy to drive and just so predictable, even when I stepped over the limit – which sadly I did all too often!”
“The car always felt nimble and, thanks to its clever camber compensation and anti-roll system, was simply unbelievable on the brakes. I was actually able to out brake just about anything else on the track, even the much lighter smaller engined cars!!”
“Perhaps my most rewarding achievement of the year was when I broke the Donnington Park lap record by a full second,” said Charles. “The more so as it was a record that had previously been held by my brother Andy!! There’s nothing quite like good-natured sibling rivalry – I didn’t stop smiling for a week!!”
