Dax Driver, Duncan Cowper

Yet Another Championship Win for Duncan & DAX
Despite an annoying fuelling problem that strangled a potential power output of 400+ bhp and made it extremely difficult to get off the line, Duncan Cowper was still able to pilot his DAX Rush Hyabusa Turbo to secure this year’s prestigious TOTB Handling Shootout title.

His fastest lap time of 36.71 secs was enough to give him a comfortable outright class win in a top-ranked 39-strong RWD Class entry which included such vehicles as a 900+ bhp Dodge Viper and several Megabusa Turbo Westfields – one producing over 600 bhp!

The Ten-Of-The-Best competition has rapidly established itself as one of the most important events in every performance-orientated competitor’s calendar and proves just as big a draw for spectators as it does for those taking part.

The format of the competition – which was held this year at Elvington on Sunday July 30th – is divided into three disciplines; best ¼ mile time, best handling circuit time and best top speed with entrants in turn being divided into three classes; FWD, RWD and 4WD.

Duncan’s commanding win in the RWD class was more than sufficient to gain him a place in the TOTB Shootout Finals. In this part of the competition there are no class divisions – qualifying being entirely decided by the times set on the day. Struggling with an almost disastrous fuelling stutter on take off, Duncan and the DAX Rush Hyabusa Turbo were still able to achieve the winning lap time of 36.54 secs to make Duncan Cowper the TOTB Handling Shootout Champion 2006.

Even averaged over all three disciplines, Duncan’s position for the entire TOTB event was a highly creditable 5th – no mean achievement in the face of significant fuelling difficulties and a packed and hungry top-class field of over 125 entrants.

“The handling title was the one that I was really after”, said Duncan “and I just couldn’t be more pleased with the result”.

“It was reassuring in the handling heats to find that I was over 2 full seconds faster than my nearest Sevenesque rival but when the engine faltered yet again at the start of the shootout final, I thought I just wasn’t going to be able to make up for the time lost.”

“I shouldn’t have worried! In fact, it’s all made me wonder just how much more there is to come from the DAX – I can’t wait for Time Attack and the Car Tuner Grand Prix in August!!”
