DAX does it again with DAX 427 upgrade

December 21, 1999

Yet another brilliant yet simple innovation has been announced by DJ Sportscars International - this time a significant upgrade to the best-selling hooped ladder frame version of the DAX 427.

A new backbone brace gives this chassis, which is chosen by 95% of DAX 427 customers, a significant improvement in rigidity. The one-inch, round-tube structure - the work of designer Peter Walker and development engineer Gary Sanders - triangulates the backbone of the car from the differential unit to the prop. shaft safety hoop and on to the front footwell.

Fitting the backbone brace brings the hooped ladder frame chassis closer to the Supertube chassis in terms of rigidity while encroaching as little as possible on the internal dimensions of the car, says Peter. 'We were aiming for a half-way stage between the two, but have found improvements which exceeded our wildest expectations.'

The backbone brace will be fitted to all new conventional-build ladder frame DAX 427 at no extra cost - offering near Supertube rigidity at a saving of some £1500. It is not, however, suitable for some gearbox options, including autos. The Supertube will remain available for those customers who require the ultimate chassis performance from a DAX 427.

This improvement has already been retro-fitted to the new DAX 427 demonstrator which debuted at Donington in September. The backbone brace will be offered as an upgrade to existing ladder frame 427s with suitable gearboxes at a cost of just UKP150 + VAT (provided the car is delivered to DJ with the existing transmission tunnel already removed). A revised transmission tunnel with carpet will also be required at a further UKP145 + VAT.

As with all DAX models, the DAX 427 is designed to meet all SVA requirements. Last year, a DJ Sportscars DAX Rush became the first amateur-built car to receive a Minister's Approval Certificate from the Vehicle Inspectorate's main London Testing Centre, passing at its first attempt.

DJ Sportscars International, manufacturer of the DAX 427, DAX Rush and DAX Kamala, is one of the longest established component car manufacturers and has a world-wide reputation for engineering excellence. The company has been in business for more than 30 years and has been designing and building component cars for 19 years.
