So you want to build a Rush…

Part 9 - Trimming out

Our budget Rush has been treated to the luxury factory trim, with two-tone, high-back vinyl seats and contoured dash.

Patrick explains that the trim kit is supplied pre-cut and piped/panelled where needed, ready to fit. The only important things to watch are that the garage is kept well ventilated (to avoid involuntary 'glue sniffing') and that the pieces are fitted in the correct order - the exposed floor chassis rails first, followed by the footwell areas, the side panels, the rear bulkhead panel, the floor sections and, lastly, the transmission tunnel. This latter item is covered in three parts; a vinyl covering for the rear flange, a vinyl-topped centre section and a front section extending forward from the gear lever.

At the front of the transmission tunnel is another of Patrick's little detail tweaks - a U-shaped bracket attached to the top surface, to which the lower part of the dash can be securely fastened. "This bracket is easily fabricated," said Patrick, "and adds to the overall feeling of quality.

"Incidentally, whether you stick the floor carpet down or not is up to you. It's nice to be able to take it out and dry it if it gets wet - but do make sure it is well secured under the pedals. If it starts moving about under you're feet, it can be very dangerous."

Then the seats go in, each mounted at the rear into two holes in the rear 'L' section crossmember and, at the front, with two bolts and spacer tubes. "They must be bolted right to the chassis members - metal to metal," Patrick stressed. "That's an SVA requirement."
