THE
COMPANY: Established over 30 years ago, this family-run business has
become one of the leading kitcar manufacturers. Thanks to significant
promotion, the company now enjoys a reputation, both in the UK and abroad, for
producing top-quality, high performance, sportscars.
The Dax Tojeiro is
really DJ Sportscars' flagship. It's the car that set the company on its way
all those years ago and has been the subject of a great deal of research and
development - a process that is still continuing. Like most other successful
companies, it's the attention to detail that sorts the men from the boys and
the people at DJ are almost fanatical in that respect. Just about every aspect
of the kit has been scrutinised and modified at some stage in its history. So
that from the quality of the GRP mouldings to the carefully calculated
suspension geometry, and right down to the clear instructions for building the
car to meet SVA standards, the Tojeiro kit can be considered to be well
sorted.
Pam, Brian and Simon Johns run the company but are quick to
point out that kitcar production is a team effort and consider they are
particularly fortunate to have two key members of staff, the chief design
engineer, Peter Walker and development engineer Gary Saunders.
DJ
operates from large premises in Harlow and it is one of the few kitcar
companies to have a separate showroom containing a number of demonstration
cars. The majority of production work is carried out in-house with the GRP shop
undertaking moulding work for other kitcar manufacturers. With well laid-out
offices, a fully stocked store and well-equipped workshops, the whole
atmosphere of the place is one of professional competence.
Currently
about 15 people are in DJ's employ. So it's a small company by general
standards but quite large for a kitcar firm. Hot on the wheels of the Tojeiro
is the Rush - a Lotus Seven-inspired sportscar that now rivals the Tojeiro in
terms of sales - and the very distinctive Kamala, the moulds and jigs for which
are now for sale.
DJ say they've found the majority of demand for the
Kamala is for fully-built cars - not an area they are keen to
enter.
Stable and well run by friendly and knowledgeable people, DJ
Sportscars is a reliable company to deal with.
The Tojeiro is properly
engineered and performs well; it isn't the cheapest Cobra replica on the market
but neither is it the dearest and if you appreciate quality and service this is
certainly one to consider. |
